I’ve been invited to be the featured artist for the month of March at the Alaska House Gallery in Fairbanks, Alaska. The Alaska House is a fine example of Interior Alaska’s log cabin artistry, designed and hand-built in 1939. There are oak floors, high ceilings and leaded windows in the three white-washed gallery rooms, hand...

While I spend my share of time traveling to exotic locations to photograph, I still contend that photographing in one’s backyard is viable for the average photographer. Now I confess that I have a fine backyard for this–8 acres of boreal forest, and not all backyards are the same. But, you don’t need acres really,...

One in particular stands out to me, and the numerous fist place medals to his name attest to his talents. Fairbanks sculptor Vladimir Zhikhartsev, originally from...

The Multi-block ice sculpting event is in full swing, and will end on Friday, March, 6. During a few visits, I’ve attempted to capture some portraits of the sculptors at work. While it is not challenging to grab a few token shots, it is difficult to create light, spontaneously, as the sculptors are working.

As part of the Northern Alaska Environmental Center’s “Northern Voices”, I’ll be giving a presentation at the Noel Wein library in Fairbanks on Thursday, January 8 at 7:00PM. It’s titled “Visual Notes from Alaska’s Landscape”. If you are brave enough to buffet yourself against the minus 40-50 degree temperatures we have been having across interior...

A slow sunrise from the office of AlaskaPhotoGraphics, Fairbanks, Alaska 10:00 am
This is the view from the window at AlaskaPhotographics on a wintry morning in Fairbanks. The sun is slow to appear this time of year, with winter solstice just a little over a week away. Sunrises are long and beautiful over the Alaska range...
