Marissa, the three digit folder prefix is there for these reasons:
1. It is an easy way to refer to the specific folder, which helps when sharing it with office staff.
2. The folders show up in numerical order, rather then alphabetical if names were used.
3. It helps with my website. All images in that folder are keyworded with the folder number so they can be easily searched.
4. Some use it to group folders for backup, although I don’t do that.

Thanks for the description of your workflow – I for one am really interested. I am still at the stage of grouping images by trip and made the unfortunate choice of grouping them by camera as well, so I have a lot to learn regarding organization! I don’t have nearly as many files as you do, so it has worked (barely) thus far.

This is a great article, Patrick. I have often wondered what that 3-digit prefix was for. It appears that you have a very organized file system. And it is definitely important for so many thousands of images to be organized.

Sections 1 and 2 above are particularly interesting to me right now: why do you need a 3-digit prefix for your folders?
