Hi Kay,
I'll be out of the country during your visit to Alaska. But you will have a great time for sure. The settings on the 1D are quite complex, but reading the manual 10 times is a good start! I still carry mine with me. When in doubt, the auto settings are pretty amazing these days. Happy travels. You have some great destinations in your itinerary. Fairbanks being the least photographic, although I love living here.

Your photography always amazes me. I will be coming to Alaska July 12th, 2011. I would love to meet you in person and get some tips on my Canon Mark 11 D's settings. I am struggling with the settings and I must leave your backyard with some great shots. I have a good macro lens and 100-400 zoom. I recently purchased an extender to get close ups of the bears.
I will be flying into Anchorage and driving to Denali- possibly Fairbanks down to Seward and time permitting Homer. I am looking to having a lifetime experience for the 2 weeks I will be there.
Your travels certainly keep you going and you likely won't be home during this time but if you are and could spare some of your great wisdom to a struggling amateur with a professional camera, I would greatly appreciate your help. I lost my husband Jan. 2010,he knew the joy photography brings to me. So he helped me acquire some very nice equipment but I truly am struggling with the settings. I know you often use similar camera and lens. Any must see places and stops along the way would also be appreciated. Thank-you for sharing such beautiful photographs.

Thanks for the image appreciation folks. And Eli, the 100-400 survived a generally wet three weeks, surprisingly. I wondered if it might tank partway along the journey, but it still glides fine.

That first photo is a stunner! Looks like you got pretty cold and wet shooting the penguins. I won't doubt that the 1Ds III held up, but what about the 100-400?
