South Georgia Island

On the eve of Jan 6 we arrived at South Georgia Island after a few days of open ocean travel from the Falkland Islands. While artfully dodging a pathway through a beach littered with fur seals, elephant seals, and king penguins, my brain was in stimulus overload. This includes sight, sound, and smell. Two of us sat down while we waited for the other passengers to make the journey through the maze of bio mass strung along the sand. After a few moments a king penguin walked directly towards me and finally stopped about three feet in front of me, twisting its neck in various positions to check me out. I had left my camera at our beach landing sight, since we were in a bit of hurry to plot out a course of travel for the guests. So I grabbed my Iphone and took a video of this inquisitive penguin as it walked around us. Unfortunately, I can’t shove that through the air waves from the southern hemisphere. The days are long and sleep is short, such is the way of an antarctic summer. It reminds me of Alaska’s summers in the northern hemisphere.
